The Start of the Legend

The company began in 1887 by founder Torakusu Yamaha in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. At the start, it focused on making musical instruments such as pianos and organs. Their logo was a circle of three interlocking tuning forks which are tools used to get pianos in tune.

 

In the years after the war, several Japanese companies focused on diversifying their product offering. This was to help make up for lost time as well as to make use of war-time manufacturing machines. Yamaha's company president Genichi Kawakami decided to focus on making small engines, particularly motorcycle engines.

 

This endeavor saw great success. In 1955, the Yamaha Motor Company branched off from the larger corporation. They had great results with manufacturing two-stroke engine motorcycles. In 1968, they followed up with four-stroke engines. Yamaha powersports vehicles began growing in great popularity.

 

Expanding Yamaha® Powersports Vehicles

By the 1980s, the company had already spent a few decades as a motorcycle manufacturer. The company decided to branch out and create more vehicles in the all-terrain vehicle market and the personal watercraft market. These efforts were fueled by innovation, such as the release of the WaveRunner® 500 in 1986, which revolutionized the industry. Soon Yamaha Powersports were a leading contender in a variety of markets.
