In The Beginning

 

During World War II, brothers Allen and Edgar Hetteen formed their Hetteen Hoist & Derrick Shop with David Johnson, a friend of theirs. The venture was located in Rousseau, Minnesota, and initially had a focus on fixing equipment for local farmers.

 

Johnson had the idea to develop a vehicle that could travel easily over snow and involved some coworkers in his designing process. Because the ongoing war restricted the usage of materials, this sled was built with used parts and scrap metal, with its skis formed from a Chevy bumper.

 

The company rebranded as Polaris® in 1955 after the war had ended. They were able to release their very first snowmobile in 1956, improving upon Johnson’s initial designs. Edgar Hetteen even took one of his company’s snowmobiles on a 1200-mile trek through the Alaskan wilderness, which took place over the course of twelve days. Hauling 900 pounds of gear through subzero temperatures was no easy task, but the Polaris® snowmobile churned through the task and allowed Hetteen to complete the trip successfully.

 

Further Developments

 

Since the 1950s, Polaris® has continued to expand their company to build more types of powersports vehicles. Their first all-terrain vehicle was released during the 1980s. They produced their first motorcycle in 2009.

 

Polaris® vehicles are used by the general public for work and recreational purposes, but they’re also favored by government agencies and professional ventures. Their consistency, reliability and innovative designs have made this company into the titan they are today.
